Beginner Questions about Websites from Affiliates

Introduction.

There are many questions from beginners about building websites (web sites) as an affiliate. These are a few.

Questions from beginners.

Question:

What if you don't necessarily have an idea, let alone a site? Which is better? Is it smarter to sign-up with all the affiliate programs to find merchants? Or, is it better to focus on the niche, then seek out any and all sites (programs or single sites) offering affiliate schemes?

Answer:

You are strongly encouraged to start with the site idea. There are merchants for virtually any idea. Coming up with the idea, for the site, is the hard part.

Question:

When people say, they have a "small" site (50-100 pages), to me it sounds big. Is there a way to create such a big site easily? Do you use CSS and templates in Dreamweaver? Is it important to have 100 pages to start?

Answer:

Don't aim for a size. Aim for a site. The size will be a factor of the site. This means one page (mini-site). Or, it means a million pages.

If a web site is larger than 50-100 pages, odds are many of the pages are dynamically generated, or content provided by others.

Question:

Say an idea is found, the research is completed, and it seems like a good niche. How the heck do you possibly write 50 to 100 pages of content? Does anyone use other sites, or magazines, etc. to find content?

Answer:

This is focusing on size and content. That's not ideal. Focus on the site. Provide value to visitors. Solve a problem. Make things easier.

For instance, what if your site is dedicated to baby diapers?

Compare the pros and cons of cloth versus disposable diapers. Include affiliate links to buy cloth diapers and cloth diaper-cleaning services. Compare the pros and cons of the various brands of diapers. Have a price comparison of the various brands.

Direct people to the cheapest place to buy diapers (through affiliate links, of course). Include the ability for people to vote and/or leave comments about their favorite diapers.

If you want, include a forum. Include AdSense ads. Include banner ads, or other links, to things parents of young children find interesting.

Question:

Is it recommended to set up an Adwords campaign or use Adsense with related links (of course)? How does that work..in a nutshell? Does someone click an Adsense link and you get a few pennies?

Answer:

It is recommended not doing AdWords until you know what you are doing.

Get the site up and running. Get organic traffic. Optimize the website to feature the best converting stuff, more prominently. Figure out how much you're earning per unique visitor to your site. Determine if it is affordable to use AdWords or other forms of advertising.

AdSense is fine. Yes, you earn money for each click.

Question:

Is it possible to find, say 20 to 50 merchants, via affiliate programs to cover most topics for my niche idea? Or, is it not so much about the number of affiliate merchants as it depends on the product/service being promoted?

Answer:

Not all areas have that many. However, there are enough affiliate programs in just about any niche. It's usually more about quality than quantity.

Conclusion.

These questions help the beginner to get started building websites for the affiliate market.
